The number of food and beverage options continue to grow in the Nations neighborhood, and Fifty First Kitchen & Bar co-owner and Nations' resident Christy Thurman is helping lead the charge, as she plans to open two new projects this year.
First up is The Nations Bar & Grill, a casual neighborhood spot currently under construction in the former Osman's Auto Sale & Repair shop at 705 51st Avenue North. Aiming for a late summer opening, Thurman describes it as a "retro diner meets bar and grill," with plans to be open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. seven days a week, serving one all-day menu for lunch, dinner and late night.
Chef Mark Dobbs, who previously ran the kitchens at Alegria and Americano, is putting together a menu of "good old fashioned American dishes with a twist." Examples include crispy barbecue Brussels sprouts with blue cheese, a blackberry fried chicken sandwich with arugula on a brioche bun, and both a croque madame and monsieur. Thurman says the menu will be heavy on side dishes, and vegetables from the Fifty First Kitchen garden will be used frequently.
The beverage program will include a full bar, serving up straightforward, traditional cocktails, along with more playful options like banana cream pie bushwhackers and frozen drinks from the margarita machine. Brews will include domestic cans and bottles, with plenty of local options, and several box wines will make an appearance.
As for the restaurant space itself, there will be seating for 64 inside, with all high-top tables and custom retro bar stools. Wood from an old railroad car is also being utilized in the design of the interior. Additional seating for another 60 will be outside in a large garden and patio area, with a roll-up garage door allowing for outdoor bar service. Thurman says they are keeping the color theme on the exterior, and even recently refurbished the property's neon-lit 'The Nations' sign, one of the neighborhood's most recognizable landmarks.
And once The Nations Bar & Grill is up and running, Thurman says they will commence work once again on Grounded, a new coffee shop and juice bar located at 907 51st Avenue North behind Fifty First Kitchen (photo of property below). While full details on the project have not yet been revealed, Thurman says that the majority of the interior build-out work is done, and that she is working with local Roast, Inc. on sourcing coffee beans.
So be sure to check back soon for more details on both projects.
