Take a First Look Inside Sunda Nashville, Billy Dec’s First Foray Outside of Chicago

The pan-Asian restaurant opens today in The Gulch

After a weekend of preview dinners, restaurateur Billy Dec and his Rockit Ranch Productions hospitality group are set to open Chicago import Sunda this afternoon at 4 p.m.

The 8,000-square-foot Gulch restaurant, Dec’s first outside of the Windy City, has been completely gutted and remodeled, showing no trace of the space’s previous life as an outpost of Mexican chain Cantina Laredo. Design firm Strada, LLC drew heavy inspiration from Sunda’s original location, with the two sharing a number of similarities in terms of finishes and furnishings.

The 250-seat interior is wide open for the most part, with views from end to end. The main bar seats approximately 25, with three eight-seat communal tables and a handful of four-tops adjacent to it. Diners can also pull up a chair to the dedicated sushi bar.

The main dining room consists primarily of two and four-tops, the later of which can be expanded to comfortably accommodate groups of six. The private dining room has seating for roughly 28 and comes outfitted with televisions wired for presentations.

The outdoor patio, once Middle Tennessee’s weather makes up its mind, will seat 40.

Take a look around, and be sure to hit the tipline and share any first impressions if you visit this week.
