M Street’s nineteen-year-old sushi spot Virago changed addresses again this week, but its new home is just steps away, down McGavock Street. The dimly lit, red-tinted interior leans heavily towards late-night lounge scene, with plenty of private space and secluded booths.
The edgier sushi hang at 1120 McGavock also welcomes the rollout of an interesting new late-night menu — featuring all drinks and dishes under $10. On Tuesday through Thursday from 10 until 11 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 10 p.m. until midnight, diners can choose from drinks, sushi, and Virago hot classics like pork katsu and rock shrimp on the $10-and-under menu. (See the full late-night menu below.)
Virago’s new location also sees the addition of temaki (hand rolls) to the menu plus four new makimonos (sushi roll) options from sixteen-year Virago-veteran sushi chef Himmi.
With the move, the restaurant has also expanded its extensive collection of Japanese whisky.
